Seneca Falls Man Faces Drugs, Weapons Charges in Ontario County

A Seneca Falls man is facing multiple charges following a traffic stop in the Town of Phelps.

According to authorities, 46-year-old Joseph Smith was arrested on Friday on charges of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the third degree, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the seventh degree, and on an outstanding Family Court warrant.

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest followed a traffic stop in front of 185 State Route 96. When Smith exited the vehicle, officers allegedly found him in possession of a white powdery substance. A presumptive field test later indicated the substance tested positive for cocaine.

Smith was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Ontario County Jail. He is scheduled to appear in Phelps Town Court at a later date to answer the charges.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
