Port Byron Man Arrested in 2021 Montezuma Fatal Hit-and-Run

After a four-year investigation, New York State Police have arrested a Port Byron man in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that occurred in 2021.

The crash happened on February 9, 2021, around 9:45 p.m. on State Route 31, when 59-year-old Donald Condes of Auburn was struck while lying in the westbound lane. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators with the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation in Auburn pursued the case for years, following leads from the New York State Intelligence Center and conducting multiple interviews.

This week, troopers identified the driver as 41-year-old Rocco Stanley. Police say Stanley was operating a black Dodge Journey SUV at the time of the crash. He turned himself in at the Auburn barracks on Tuesday and was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident, a felony.

Stanley was taken to the Cayuga County Jail to await arraignment.

State Police are still asking anyone with information about the SUV involved to contact investigators.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
