A Bath man is facing felony charges after police say he was found inside another person’s apartment armed with a knife, prompting officers to de-escalate what they said was a dangerous situation.
Police were called to an apartment on Pine Street early Monday afternoon after receiving a report that a man, later identified as 48-year-old Robert Wood, was inside with a knife. All of the residents inside were able to get out safely before officers arrived. After getting permission from the tenants, officers entered the apartment and found Wood armed with what they described as a large knife. Police say they recognized him from previous encounters.
Officers attempted to negotiate with Wood and de-escalate the situation, but he refused to drop the weapon. When he continued to pose an immediate threat to himself and others, police used a less-lethal shotgun, striking Wood twice with bean bag rounds. The impact caused Wood to drop the knife, allowing officers to take him into custody. Wood was taken to the hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and underwent a mental health evaluation.
Police later determined he was under the influence of dangerous drugs at the time of the incident.
Wood is being held without bail at the Steuben County Jail on felony charges of criminal possession of a weapon and menacing a police officer.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
