A Summerhill man is facing drunk driving charges after deputies say he was caught speeding and found to be more than twice the legal limit.
According to Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck, deputies arrested 48-year-old Clifton Payne on October 8.
A sheriff’s deputy on patrol in the area of Poverty Lane and Route 41A reportedly saw Payne’s vehicle traveling 80 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone. After stopping the vehicle, deputies determined Payne was intoxicated. He was taken to the Cayuga County Public Safety Building, where officials say he registered a .23% blood alcohol content—nearly three times the legal limit.
Payne was charged with Driving While Intoxicated (first offense), Aggravated DWI, and multiple traffic infractions. He was released with appearance tickets and is due in Summerhill Town Court on October 21.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
