State Police have arrested a Steuben County man following an investigation into repeated false reports to emergency services and child protection authorities.
Investigators say that throughout 2025, 40-year-old Thomas Margeson made numerous false calls to 911 and the New York State Child Abuse and Maltreatment Hotline. These calls led to repeated responses from law enforcement and child protective services, all of which were determined to be unfounded.
Authorities say the reports were knowingly false and misused emergency and child protection resources.
Margeson was arrested on New Year’s Day and charged with 18 counts of falsely reporting a catastrophe or emergency to an official agency in the Town of Bath and a dozen counts of falsely reporting child abuse in the Village of Bath
Margeson was issued two appearance tickets and is scheduled to appear in Town of Bath Court on February 2 and Village of Bath Court on February 4.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
