A Penn Yan man is accused of detonating an apparent homemade explosive device in the village.
At around 8:20 Wednesday night, police, along with several residents, heard a loud explosion in the area of East Elm Street. Officers found ball bearings in the area, and several neighbors complained their homes were struck by debris. While on scene, officers were approached by Damon Walker, who allegedly told them the noise was a firecracker going off and officers should leave. The 33-year-old was detained and found to have two 12-gauge shotgun shells. Several pieces of what appeared to be a detonated homemade explosive were also located.
After being brought to the police department for processing, Walker is accused of obstructing and physically resisting. He is also accused of causing damage to the interior of the police department. Walker was charged with criminal mischief and obstructing governmental administration. Walker was released on an appearance ticket.
Additional charges are pending lab results of evidence collected at the scene.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
