Two people are facing multiple charges after Ontario County Sheriff’s deputies pulled over a vehicle in Clifton Springs and found drugs, a weapon, and three young children inside.
Deputies say they stopped the vehicle on County Road 8 just after 1 a.m. Tuesday, after observing several traffic violations. The driver, 39-year-old Vanessa. Black of Morgans Run in Clifton Springs was allegedly found to be impaired by drugs, in possession of a controlled substance, and in possession of a weapon. She was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon, three counts of Leandra’s Law DWI, three counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, along with other traffic violations.
Her passenger, 42-year-old Chaunsey Gilbert of Rochester, was also charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon, two counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance, and three counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
Investigators say all three children in the car were under the age of ten. Ontario County Child Protective Services responded to the scene and took custody of the children.
Black was evaluated by a certified drug recognition expert, who confirmed she was impaired by drugs. She also provided a blood sample for further toxicology testing.
Both Black and Gilbert were taken to the Ontario County Jail and held for centralized arraignment.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
