Police: Bath Man Bit EMT’s Hand, Attempted to Kick Officer During Arrest

SHARE NOW

Bath police arrested a man Thursday after he allegedly refused to leave a local grocery store and became combative with officers and emergency responders.

Police say officers were called to Tops Friendly Markets on West Morris Street for a report of a man trespassing after being previously banned from the store. Store management identified the suspect as 48-year-old James Crawford, who was reportedly asked several times to leave but refused.

According to police, Crawford continued to refuse to leave after officers arrived and was taken into custody. Police say he became combative during the arrest, leading to a brief struggle. Officers also allege that Crawford attempted to kick an officer in the knee in an effort to cause injury.

Crawford was evaluated by Bath Ambulance following his arrest, where police say he bit an EMT on the hand. The EMT was wearing gloves at the time and was not injured.

Crawford was charged with two felony counts of attempted assault, along with misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest and trespass. Police say Crawford has a history of violent behavior toward law enforcement officers and medical personnel.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
