An off-duty New York State Trooper came to the defense of a woman who was being assaulted by a man in the village of Bath.
Officers responded to the area of the Auto Zone on West Morris Street Thursday afternoon for the report of a man beating a woman in front of a child. Despite the suspect taking off on foot prior to police arrival, the State Trooper who stopped to help the victim was able to identify the suspect, which enabled Bath officers to make an arrest. After speaking with other witnesses, officers located 21-year-old Nicholas Harrison out back of the nearby Microtel.
Harrison was charged with felony aggravated family offense, along with misdemeanor charges of endangering the welfare of a child and unlawful imprisonment.
Following arraignment at the Steuben County Jail, he was released without bail.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
