The Ithaca Police Department reports the arrest of a 35-year-old city resident following a bicycle traffic stop early Saturday morning.
Around 3:40 a.m., officers stopped a bicyclist in the 100 block of West Clinton Street for observed traffic violations. During the stop, officers noticed what appeared to be a handgun in the front pouch of the rider’s sweatshirt. The suspect, identified as Phillip Lewis, of Ithaca, was taken into custody without incident. The weapon was later determined to be an imitation handgun.
Lewis was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree, a Class D felony.
He was arraigned in Ithaca City Court before Judge Peacock and remanded to the Tompkins County Jail.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
