An Ithaca man faces multiple charges after police say he resisted arrest and was found with a handgun during a confrontation in a downtown parking garage.
According to the Ithaca Police Department, officers were on foot patrol in the Green Street Parking Garage early Monday morning when they spotted a man acting suspiciously between parked vehicles. The man, identified as 40-year-old Justin Carl, was questioned as part of an ongoing investigation into a series of vehicle break-ins and thefts across the city.
Police say Carl became confrontational and physically resisted officers’ attempts to handcuff him. During the struggle, a Glock-style handgun reportedly fell from his sweatshirt pocket. Officers were able to safely take him into custody after a brief altercation. Carl suffered minor injuries; no officers were hurt.
He is charged with obstruction of governmental administration, resisting arrest, and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Additional charges are pending.
Police are reminding residents to keep their vehicles locked and report any suspicious activity.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
