The investigation into an older man reportedly being assaulted by his in-home caregiver resulted in the arrest of a Steuben County man.
The victim claimed to State Police that his caregiver, 52-year-old Michael Morris, of Canisteo, struck him in the face with a dog dish following a verbal altercation. The victim suffered minor injuries, including a cut on his nose, facial swelling, and a black eye. Following the assault, Morris allegedly forced the victim to drive him to a local Dollar General store, where he took the victim’s car keys in order to prevent him from leaving. Fearing further harm, the victim left on foot and sought help from a nearby residence where he called 911.
Troopers attempted to locate Morris at the Dollar General but found he had already left the area. After further investigation, State Police contacted Morris on the telephone and he agreed to meet at the Dollar General but never arrived. Authorities later located Morris at his residence and placed him under arrest without incident.
Morris was charged with felony assault: injuring a victim 65 or older with the defendant at least ten years younger, criminal possession of a weapon, intent to use, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and without owner consent.
