A handshake between a village justice and a local police chief has resulted in legal trouble for one.
During Monday night’s village board meeting in Bath, 71-year-old Robert Plaskov allegedly initiated a handshake with Police Chief Colin Taft but refused to release his grip. Plaskov, who is Bath Village Justice, is accused of squeezing Taft’s hand and abruptly pulling him forward, causing the chief to stumble and hit his shin on a chair, reportedly resulting in pain. Taft had to use nearby chairs to steady himself from falling.
Following the incident, Chief Taft arrested Plaskov on a harassment charge and issued him an appearance ticket for Bath Village Court at a later date in front of a different justice.
The Bath Police Department said the alleged incident occurred in front of a room full of people and was captured on video camera.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
