A local man is facing charges after police say he was driving while intoxicated in the village of Penn Yan.
According to the Penn Yan Police Department, officers arrested 26-year-old Alexander Schroo, of Hammondsport, following a traffic stop prompted by reckless driving behavior. Police say Schroo’s vehicle rapidly accelerated from a traffic light, squealing its tires and exceeding the posted speed limit.
When officers stopped the vehicle and approached the driver, they noted several signs of intoxication. Police also reported detecting the smell of alcohol coming from inside the vehicle, and an open container of alcohol was later discovered.
Schroo was given a series of field sobriety tests, which police say he failed. He was then taken into custody and transported to the Yates County Jail, where he submitted to a chemical breath test. His blood alcohol content was measured at .16%, twice the legal limit.
Following arrest processing at the Penn Yan Police Department, Schroo was released with traffic tickets. He is scheduled to appear in Penn Yan Village Court at a later date.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
