Fight at Grocery Store Leads to Sterling Man’s Arrest

SHARE NOW

A fight at a grocery store in Cayuga County resulted in the arrest of a Sterling man.

According to the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office, the victim in the alleged incident claimed that a man, later identified as 42-year-old William David, approached them from behind and punched them in the back of the head. The victim told police they were holding the hand of a 4-year-old girl at the time of the incident. After being struck, the victim reported they fell to the ground along with the child, who hit her head on a wall. The child did not suffer any injuries.

Deputies learned David and the victim were former acquaintances and had a brief verbal exchange prior to the attack in the Fair Haven store. David fled the scene prior to police arrival and turned himself in to law enforcement the following day after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

David was charged with menacing and endangering the welfare of a child, both misdemeanors. He was released on appearance tickets for Sterling Town Court.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
