A Phelps man is facing DWI charges after authorities say he crashed into a tree, left the scene, and was later found with his vehicle on fire.
The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were called to State Route 88 in Phelps at around 11:47 p.m. Tuesday for a report of a vehicle on fire. They found a 2003 Honda Civic stopped in the southbound lane, with the Phelps Fire Department also responding.
Investigators determined that the car had left its lane, struck a tree in the backyard of a Gardner Road home, and then left without reporting the crash.
Deputies identified the driver as Peter Mastowski, who was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated and issued multiple traffic citations. He was released to a sober third party and is scheduled to appear in Phelps Town Court at a later date.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
