A Wayne County man is facing charges in connection with two separate larcenies that occurred two months ago in neighboring Cayuga County.
On March 25th, Auburn Police received a call from a person who claimed their wallet had been stolen from a locker in the locker room of Planet Fitness. As police were speaking him, the victim found that someone was trying to use one of his credit cards stored in his wallet to purchase items at the Auburn Walmart. Police say the victim was able to cancel the credit card before the alleged theft completed the transaction.
Three days later, a woman reported to 911 that a man had stolen her purse that was in a shopping cart at the Auburn Walmart as he distracted her. The man attempted to leave but threw the purse down after the victim yelled for help.
Auburn Police’s investigation resulted in the arrest on Tuesday of 35-year-old Travis Ryan of Clyde. For the incident at Planet Fitness, Ryan was charged criminal possession of stolen property and attempted identity theft. Police charged Ryan with Grand Larceny for the Walmart incident.
Ryan was arrested at the Cayuga County Jail where he was being housed for a separate unrelated crime.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
