Cayuga County Man Man Accused of Punching Deputy During Overdose Call

SHARE NOW

A Cayuga County man is facing multiple charges after allegedly assaulting a deputy during an overdose call earlier this month.

Sheriff Brian Schenck said deputies and New York State Troopers responded to a home on Cross Road in Springport around 11:39 p.m. on August 2 for a reported overdose. Officers found 46-year-old Randy Grader lying on the ground in what appeared to be a hallucinatory state.

While deputies were gathering information, Grader allegedly became aggressive, stood up, and punched a deputy in the face, knocking him to the ground and leaving him disoriented.

Grader was taken into custody and charged with second-degree assault, menacing, resisting arrest, and obstructing governmental administration. The deputy was treated at Auburn Community Hospital and later released.

Grader was also treated at the hospital for the reported overdose before being transported to the Cayuga County Jail, where he was sent without bail following arraignment.

The sheriff’s office thanked the New York State Police, Fleming and Union Springs fire departments, Cayuga County E-911, and Auburn Community Hospital staff for their assistance.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
