Cayuga County Man Arrested on Criminal Contempt Charge

SHARE NOW

A Niles man was arrested on a charge of criminal contempt following a welfare check in Cayuga County.

Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck reports that 65-year-old Jon Tanner of Niles was arrested on December 16 and charged with criminal contempt in the second degree, a Class A misdemeanor.

Deputies responded at approximately 6:29 a.m. to a welfare check involving a man reportedly sleeping in a vehicle. Deputies located Tanner and confirmed he was in good health.

During the investigation, deputies determined Tanner was the subject of a full stay-away order of protection and had recently been communicating with the protected party by text message and phone call, in violation of the order.

Tanner was taken into custody at about 7:28 a.m. and transported to the Cayuga County Public Safety Building for processing. He was later turned over to the Cayuga County Jail for a CAP Court arraignment later that evening.

Authorities say Tanner was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled to appear in Niles Town Court on January 15

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
