California Man Held in Steuben County Jail Following Child Exploitation Investigation

SHARE NOW

A California man is being held in the Steuben County Jail following a child exploitation investigation by the New York State Police.

State Police in Painted Post arrested 24-year-old Jacob Hanes of Palm Springs on multiple charges related to the alleged online exploitation of a minor.  He is charged with promoting an obscene sexual performance by a child, a Class D felony; criminal possession of a forged instrument in the second degree, also a Class D felony; and endangering the welfare of a child, a Class A misdemeanor.

Investigators say Hanes communicated electronically with a juvenile and requested sexually explicit images and videos while knowing the victim was under the age of 17. Authorities also say Hanes had a forged New York State identification card at the time of his arrest. Hanes was located and taken into custody in Buffalo while visiting the area and was transported to Steuben County for centralized arraignment.

He is currently being held at the Steuben County Jail pending further court proceedings.

State Police say the investigation remains ongoing.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
