Early Friday morning, a Village of Bath Police officer observed a vehicle run a red light at the intersection of Liberty and West William streets. The driver, identified as 65-year-old Nathaniel Pittman of Bath, became the focus of a drug investigation during the traffic stop.
Suspecting drug activity involving Pittman and a passenger, officers called in K9 Bud and his handler to conduct a cursory sniff of the vehicle. K9 Bud alerted to the presence of narcotics, prompting a probable cause search. Police recovered a burnt crack cocaine pipe, a container with crystal residue resembling methamphetamine, and a small rock of suspected methamphetamine. These items were seized, and charges are pending lab confirmation.
Additionally, Pittman was suspected of driving under the influence of drugs. He underwent standardized field sobriety tests and was subsequently taken into custody for Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs. Pittman was released on an appearance ticket to appear in Bath Village Court. The passenger was released without charges.
The investigation remains ongoing.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
