The Bath Village Police Department has charged a local couple after a golden retriever was found suffering severe injuries due to neglect.
Officers began investigating on September 28 after observing a female golden retriever appearing ill at a home on West Morris Street. Police say the dog showed signs of needing medical attention, and the caretakers were informed of their legal obligation to provide veterinary care.
A follow-up visit on October 3 revealed the dog had a deep laceration on its neck and still had not received medical treatment. The dog was seized under exigent circumstances and given emergency care by the SPCA. A court-approved seizure order confirmed the action.
Veterinary examination determined the dog had suffered a severe, progressive skin lesion caused by a tight rope tied around its neck, leaving deep ligature marks.
The dog’s caretakers, 45-year-old Darla Martin and 70-year-old Daniel Gartland, both of Bath, were charged with Failure to Provide Proper Sustenance and released on appearance tickets.
Authorities say the dog is recovering well under the care of a rescue organization.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
