Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck says a 40-year-old Aurelius man has been arrested in connection with a July domestic violence case.
Deputies arrested Randy Smart on September 29 on a warrant charging him with attempted assault in the third degree, a misdemeanor.
The charge stems from an incident on July 19, when deputies responded to a residence in Aurelius around 5:44 p.m. Investigators say Smart pushed a family member down a small flight of stairs, causing minor injuries. Smart allegedly fled before deputies arrived.
Authorities say Smart later turned himself in at the Sheriff’s Office. He was processed and taken to the Cayuga County Jail for arraignment, then released on his own recognizance.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
