An Auburn man has been arrested for allegedly stealing more than $3,000 from his grandmother.
Without his grandmother’s knowledge or permission, Adam Birtwell allegedly linked his CashApp account to her bank account and transferred money several times since November totaling $3,111.71. Birtwell attempted to transfer money on Wednesday totaling $4,192.30 but the transaction was not completed after his grandmother received a text alert. The victim went to her bank and the alleged thefts were uncovered.
While in custody at the Auburn Police Department, Birtwell allegedly slipped his handcuff off and attempted to escape before being apprehended.
Birtwell is charged with attempted identity theft, attempted grand larceny, identity theft, and grand larceny, all felonies, along with misdemeanor escape and unlawful possession of personal identification information.
Following his arrest, Birtwell was sent to Cayuga County Jail to await arraignment.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
