Two Penn Yan teenagers escaped injury after the van they were riding in was struck by a car at the intersection of Sand Hill Road and State Route 54A in the town of Jerusalem.
The van, driven by 16-year-old Spencer Enos, was stopped at the stop sign on Sand Hill Road when a car driven by 66-year-old Gregory Helbig, of Branchport, struck the rear driver’s side door of the van as he attempted to turn from 54A. An investigation by the Yates County Sheriff’s Office revealed Helbig allegedly consumed alcohol prior to the accident and was charged with drunken driving.
A passenger in the van, 16-year-old Madison Lewis, was not injured.
The Penn Yan Police Department held the Yates County Sheriff’s Office at the scene.
