A 14-year-old has been charged with a felony after allegedly making a bomb threat on social media that targeted the Cato school district.
The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office was made aware of the threat shortly after eight Monday night and initiated an investigation. An unidentified 14-year-old was taken into custody and charged with falsely reporting an incident.
Sheriff Brian Schenck said it does not appear the threat was credible.
“Any threats of violence against our schools or members of our community will be investigated thoroughly and those responsible will be held accountable. There are consequences for posting threats of violence on social media and it is not a joke. I would like to commend the administrative staff of the Cato School District and the members of our Sheriff’s Office for partnering on this investigation and identifying the responsible individual so quickly. I would also like to thank the Cato-Meridian Central School District for their complete cooperation in this matter.” – Sheriff Schenck.
