William “Bill” Black, 78, passed away on Thursday, July 9, 2026, peacefully at his home, where he grew his wings and went to be with God.
A celebration of his life will be held on August 1 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Savannah Fire Hall, 1770 Route 89 N, Savannah. There will be no calling hours.
Bill was born in Lyons on October 10, 1947, the son of the late Milton and Eugeania (Ball) Black. He worked in the maintenance department at Goulds Pumps and later at Baillie Lumber Company. His compassion extended far beyond his work—Bill volunteered for many years at the Beverly Animal Shelter, where his deep love for animals was evident to everyone who knew him.
Bill absolutely loved NASCAR, especially cheering on Richard Petty and Rusty Wallace. He also enjoyed spending time fishing. Known for his remarkable ability to engineer something out of nothing, Bill could always find a way to make things work.
Bill is survived by his wife, Melissa “Midget” (Wickum); his sons, William (Sissy) Black Jr. and Duane (Chrissy) Black; his sister, Erica Baldwin; his brother, Milton Black; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Sylvia Laird; his brother, Norman Black; his nephew, Buzzy Black; and a good friend, Bobby Snyder.
Those who loved Bill will remember his kindness, his ingenuity, and the gentle way he cared for both people and animals.
