Vernabelle C. Welsch

Vernabelle "Vern" C. (Hunter) Welsch, age 95, of Burdett, NY, passed away on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at home, surrounded by her family.

Vern was born on January 29, 1931, in Newport, VT, to the late Russell and Helen (Lawson) Gibb. Vern graduated from Newport High School and went on to attend Mary Hitchcock School of Nursing, graduating with the Class of 1952. A year later, she married the love of her life, Ronald Welsch, in Honolulu, HI. She worked proudly as a Registered Nurse in long-term care after she had raised her family on Long Island, NY.

Vern was an active congregant of the Burdett United Methodist Church, where she volunteered her time to care for anyone in need, and was often found working dish-to-pass dinners. She was also a voracious reader, accomplished pianist, enjoyed singing, bird watching, and always made sure there was a chair for everyone at the table. She delighted in her friends and family and will be missed by many.

Vern is survived by her daughters, Susan (Joseph) Silhan, Kathy (Joseph) Yaskulski, and Kim (Rick) Suddaby; sisters, Genevieve Hoyt and Marie Sloan; son-in-law, Daniel Cofone; grandchildren, Caryn (Nick) Dileo, Caty Silhan (Sarah Altobelli), Ryan Yaskulski, Alexa (Ryan) Ward, Deanna (Dan) Shipman, Mikaela (Tom) Parker, Lindsey Suddaby (Nathan), Madelyn Suddaby, Alicia (Jarad) Titus; along with great-grandchildren, Avery, Carly, Troy, Elawyn, Saoirse, Flynn, Brayden, Sierra, Oliver, and an expected baby-to-be.

She is predeceased by her loving husband, Ronald; daughter, Tara Cofone; and sister, Donna Murphy.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Sunday, July 19, 2026, from 1-2 p.m. at Vedder-Scott & Zinger Funeral Home, 122 N. Genesee St., Montour Falls, NY. Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. with private burial to follow.
