Rock Stream / Dundee: Richard G. 'Buck' Hathaway, age 80, of Rock Stream, NY, passed away peacefully with family at his side on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira, NY. Calling hours will be from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at the Baird Funeral Home, 36 Water Street, Dundee; where his funeral service will be held at 7:00 p.m. with Pastor David Semans officiating. Inurnment with Military Honors will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 17, in Pleasant View Cemetery in Reading Center, NY.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, 303 East Wacker Dr. Suite 2300, Chicago, IL 60601-5224.
Richard was born March 17, 1946, in Montour Falls, NY, son of the late George Jesse and Vera Elizabeth (Crapo) Hathaway. He went into the US Army right from high school in 1963, serving 3 years and was honorably discharged in 1966. A natural-born mechanic, as was discovered and instilled in the Army fixing tanks, he drove truck for Babcock Poultry before accepting a position as a full-time mechanic at Willard Psychiatric Center. On Nov. 27, 1980, in Ovid, NY, he married the long-time love of his life, Lorna Dorthy 'Doe' Hathaway. She preceded him in death on Sept. 15, 2023.
'Buck,' as he was fondly known, was a member of the Rock Stream Presbyterian Church, a Life Member of the NRA, and a former member of the Romulus Fire Dept. Auxiliary. He loved helping people, especially with car troubles; he was a natural tinkerer, enjoyed hunting and fishing, and had a passion for hats and lighters.
A loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, he will be missed by 3 sons: Michael A. (Peggy) Weber of Lansing, NY; Kurt J. (Kimberly) Hathaway of Newfield, NY; Kevin R. (Angie) Hathaway of Seale, AL; a daughter, Cheri L. (Wilmer) Zimmerman of Manheim, PA; 12 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; a brother, Patrick (Jane) Hathaway of Reading Center; a sister, Judith Prindle of Montandon, PA; and several nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
Besides his parents and his wife, he was pre-deceased by 2 sisters: Marie Rathbun and Dorothy and her husband Marshall Wood; 2 infant nieces: Penny and Georgia McComb; a brother-in-law, Gary Prindle; a nephew, Frank Prindle; and numerous in-laws on his wife's side of the family.
