Neal R. McGonigal
Neal R. McGonigal, age 77, of Watkins Glen, NY, died June 17, 2024, at home.
Born June 25, 1946, in Jersey Shore, PA, he was the son of the late Robert E. and Hilda J. (Poust) McGonigal. He was a 1964 graduate of Clearfield Area High School, Clearfield, PA, and a 1973 graduate of Penn State University. Neal served his country in the U.S. Army, obtaining the rank of sergeant, and served a thirteen-and-a-half-month tour in Vietnam. He was a member and past deacon of the First Church of Christ, Lock Haven, PA, and in 2014 became a member of Saint Mary's of the Lake Catholic Church, Watkins Glen, NY.
Mr. McGonigal retired in 2009 from Keystone Central School District, Lock Haven, PA, where he was Assistant Business Manager/Board Treasurer. Previous employment included Piper Aircraft Corporation - Manager Financial Reporting and International Paper Company - Manager Financial Systems and Control. Neal served the community youth programs, coaching in the Lock Haven Pony League, the Mill Hall AYSO Soccer program, and as coach and president of the Mill Hall Youth League Baseball, as well as a volunteer assistant coach for the Bald Eagle Nittany High School Boys Soccer Team.
Surviving is his wife, the former Marie Zastawny Hammond, of Watkins Glen, NY/Oswego, NY. He is also survived by his son, Brian N. McGonigal, and his wife Paula; grandsons Zachary and Dylan of Kylertown, PA; son Brent R. McGonigal and his wife Erin; granddaughters Kiara, Lily, and Charleigh of Mill Hall, PA. He is also survived by his sister Doris J. (David) Mitnick of Suffolk, VA; step-son Thomas (Joanne) Hammond of Oswego, NY; step-daughter Kristina Noyes and granddaughter Sara Noyes of Oswego, NY; and a great-grandson due in the fall.
The family will receive friends at the Gedon Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LLC, 121 W. Main St., Lock Haven, PA, on Monday (June 24th) from 6 PM to 8 PM; and on Wednesday (June 26th) from 10 AM to 11 AM at St. Mary's of the Lake Church, 905 N. Decatur St. in Watkins Glen. A funeral mass will be held in his honor at 11:00 AM at the church, followed by military honors and burial at Holy Cross Cemetery in Watkins Glen.
