Mary L. Hetherington

GENEVA – Mary L. Hetherington, a beloved sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 6, 2026, at 5:51 PM, surrounded by loved ones, at Geneva General Hospital in Geneva, NY.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2026, from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM at the DeVaney-Bennett Funeral Home, 181 N. Main St., Geneva, NY. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 PM in the funeral home. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Mary was born on June 7, 1954. She grew up in Horseheads/Elmira, NY, and graduated from Horseheads High School. She continued her education with an associate’s degree from Alfred University. She continued her education at Craig State School, where she earned a degree in nursing. Throughout her life, Mary was a guiding light to all of her family. She was an unwavering love and support system for everyone in her family.

Mary had two children of her own, Patricia (James) VanScoter and Carolyn Matuszak; four stepchildren who she saw as her own, Brenda Stewart, Becky Wood, RJ Hetherington, and Willie Hetherington. She was also survived by her sister, Laura (Bob) West of Windsor, NY, who will forever be grateful for the love and support she gave. In addition to her children, Mary is survived by her seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and many other relatives and friends who were touched by her love.

Mary had a passion for baking, cooking, and taking care of people, which she enjoyed with great enthusiasm. She was known for her beautiful sense of humor, her caring heart, and her “Hey, where's my kiss and hug when we would leave?” and the “I love you” that followed after. She will always be remembered by those who knew her best.
