Auburn, NY July 31, 1955 – May 22, 2026 Age 70

With deep love and profound sadness, we announce the passing of Kristen Jane Wilmot, who left this world on May 22, 2026, at the age of 70.

Born on July 31, 1955, Kristen lived a life marked by compassion, service, and a steadfast commitment to the emotional well-being of others. Kristen was born into a large and loving family, the daughter of Helen Dando Wilmot and David Henry Wilmot. She grew up in Weedsport, New York, surrounded by siblings who remained an important part of her life: John (Karen) Wilmot, Kurt (Linda) Wilmot, Elizabeth Wilmot-Bishop, and Drew (Karen) Wilmot, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Sara Hoskins.

A graduate and Valedictorian of Weedsport Junior/Senior High School, Class of 1973, Kristen was known early on for her empathy, her curiosity about people, and her natural ability to make others feel understood and valued. These qualities guided her throughout her life.

She went on to earn her Master’s degree in Humanistic Counseling and Education from Boston University (1978–1980, summa cum laude), a unique program rooted in the belief that every person carries inherent worth and potential. Kristen embraced that philosophy wholeheartedly, weaving it into every part of her personal and professional life.

Her career reflected her deep dedication to mental health and community support. She worked as a Director for Planned Parenthood and served as a Youth Counselor and Educator with the Cayuga County Employment and Training Department until a motor vehicle accident in 1990 altered her professional path. Yet even then, Kristen’s resilience and compassion never wavered.

In 2004, she became a Counselor and Facilitator for the ADAPA Support Group, offering guidance, understanding, and hope to individuals facing anxiety, depression, and panic disorders. Her work there spanned more than two decades and touched countless lives.

Kristen also served on the Board of Directors for Unity House of Cayuga County beginning in 2015, contributing her insight and heart to an organization dedicated to supporting individuals with mental health challenges, developmental disabilities, and substance use recovery. Her leadership and advocacy were invaluable.

Throughout her life, Kristen made her home in Auburn, New York, where she built deep connections and friendships. She shared many years with her beloved long-time partner, James (Jim) Harris, whose companionship and devotion brought her great joy and comfort. Also, her ex-husband and father to her two children, Peter Kofi Amankwaah, who she shared many years and memories with.

Kristen’s greatest pride and joy were her sons, Addaie (Kate) and Jacob, and her three cherished grandchildren: Ben, Emma, and Atlas Jane. She adored them deeply and delighted in their accomplishments, their laughter, and the light they brought into her life.

She was also connected to St. Peter & St. John Episcopal Church, where her faith, community involvement, and gentle presence were a source of comfort to many.

Kristen was preceded in death by her parents, Helen and David Wilmot, and her sister Sara Hoskins. She is survived by her sons, grandchildren, siblings, nieces and nephews, extended family, and many dear friends whose lives were enriched by her kindness and wisdom.

Visitation will be from 1 PM to 2 PM, with a funeral service honoring Kristen’s life held at St. Peter & St. John Episcopal Church in Auburn, NY, on June 6th at 2 PM. Burial will be at 11 AM at Lake View Cemetery in Skaneateles, a place of family history, peace, and beauty that reflects the serenity she brought into the world.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to Unity House of Cayuga County at unityhouse.org/donate, so that her legacy of compassion may continue to uplift others.

Kristen’s life was a gift — to her family, her friends, her community, and the many individuals she supported through her angelic work. Though she is no longer with us, the love she shared and the lives she touched will continue to shine brightly. Her memory will be cherished always.
