Dundee: John E. Kern, age 76, of 31 Harpending Ave., Dundee, NY, passed away Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira, NY, surrounded by his loving family. Honoring his wishes, there will be no prior calling hours. A celebration of his life will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday (April 6) at the Atlanta Fire Department, 34 University Ave., Atlanta, NY. Inurnment will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dundee Fire Company Emergency Squad, 12 Union St., Dundee, NY 14837, or the Atlanta Fire Department, 34 University Ave., Atlanta, NY 14808.

John was born February 25, 1938, in Atlanta, NY, the son of the late Norval R. and Dorothea Sick Kern. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves after graduating from high school. On July 1, 1982, in Ocala, FL, he married the former Deborah M. "Maude" Hodge. A self-employed roofer, he was the owner of John E. Kern Auction Mart in Cohocton, NY. He loved auctions and woodworking and was a life member of the Atlanta Fire Department Fire Police.

He is loved and will be dearly missed by his wife, Deborah M. "Maude" Kern, at home; a son, William Roy (Tristicia) Kern of Wayland; 2 daughters, Debra Rodgers of Wayland, NY, and Theresa Irvin of Dundee; 2 step-sons, Paul (Melissa) Orr of Hammondsport, NY, and Rodney (Kari) Soles of Avoca, NY; 16 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; his first wife, Mary White of Naples; and several nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
