Dundee: John R. Cornish, age 80, of Dundee, NY, died unexpectedly on Friday, March 1, 2013. Honoring his wishes, there will be no prior calling hours. A graveside memorial service, with military honors, will be held in Hillside Cemetery this summer on a date to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dundee Fire Company, or the Dundee Fire Company Emergency Squad, 12 Union St., Dundee, NY 14837; or the Yates County Office for the Aging, 417 Liberty St., Penn Yan, NY 14527.
John was born August 31, 1932, in Dundee, the son of the late John H. and Nellie I. Goodrich Cornish. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1953 to 1955. On December 29, 1956, in Bennettsburg, NY, he married the former Catherine L. Gardner. John was employed as a fabricator by Shepard-Niles in Montour Falls from 1956 until his retirement in 1994. A lifelong local resident, having lived for a few years in Oklahoma, Mr. Cornish was a member of American Legion Bradley-Jessop Post #660.
He is survived by two sons, Robert L. (Tita) Cornish of LaVergne, TN, and Terry L. (Mary) Cornish of Dundee; two daughters, Connie L. (Randy) Parrish of Greene, NY, and Rita C. Carson of Watkins Glen; 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, William Cornish, in 1986; a daughter, Donna Marie Washburn, in 2005; and two granddaughters, Tiffany Parrish in 1994 and Ann M. Washburn Ovenshire in 2012.
