Dundee: Howard B. Campbell, age 83, of Dundee, NY, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his bed on Thursday, May 23, 2013. Friends are invited to call from 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. Tuesday (May 28) at the Baird Funeral Home, 36 Water Street, Dundee; where a funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. with Deacon Bob Stowell officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Dundee.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dundee Baptist Church, 20 Seneca Street, Dundee, NY 14837.
Howard was born Aug. 12, 1929, in Reading Center, NY, the son of the late Burris R. and Alta P. Rider Campbell. He graduated from Dundee Central School in 1949. He worked for the Dundee Telephone Company before serving in the U.S. Army from 1951-1956. On Dec. 6, 1952, in Hagerstown, MD, he married the former Shirley M. Stitley, who passed away on July 19, 2007. A lifelong local resident, Howard was a furnace operator for Corning Glass Works, retiring after 40 years in 1991.
Mr. Campbell was a member and trustee of the Dundee Baptist Church, a member and past commander of the Dundee American Legion, and a member of the Dundee V.F.W. An avid gardener, he also loved tinkering, and collecting and repairing clocks.
He is loved and will be dearly missed by 2 sons, Terry (Lori) Campbell and David "Moe" (Mary) Campbell, both of Dundee; twin daughters Michele (John) Chiaverini of Penn Yan and Melissa (George E.) Lawson of Dundee; 2 grandchildren Jason (Kelli) Campbell of Florham Park, NJ, and Mary Beth Stoe of Ithaca; 2 great-grandchildren Sara and Thomas Campbell; 4 sisters Eleanor M. (William) Shaw of Elmira Heights, Helen L. (William) Conrad of Penn Yan, Shirley E. Jock of Williamson, NY, and Neva M. (Harold) DeWitt of Dundee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and wife, he was predeceased by a sister, Isabelle McFall, in 1950, and a brother, Bruce E. Campbell, in 1998.
