Penn Yan/Dundee: Esther Ruth Andrews, age 87, of Penn Yan, formerly of Dundee, NY, died Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital in Penn Yan, NY. Friends may call from 2-4 pm Sunday (Aug. 18) at the Baird Funeral Home, 36 Water Street, Dundee, where a funeral service will be held at 4:00 pm with Rev. Lucinda O'Leary officiating. Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday in Hillside Cemetery, Dundee. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dundee Fire Company or the Dundee Fire Company Emergency Squad, 12 Union St., Dundee, NY 14837.
Esther was born May 8, 1926, in Bath, NY, the daughter of the late Gustave J. "Gus" and Wilma Mead Radka. On January 22, 1943, in Watkins Glen, NY, she married the love of her life, Martin Andrews Jr. A lifelong area resident, Esther had worked in the vineyards for Ross Summerson in Himrod, NY, for 20 years. Mrs. Andrews was a past member of the Penn Yan American Legion Ladies Aux.; was an avid craftmaker, and enjoyed crochet.
She is loved and will be dearly missed by her husband of over 70 years, Martin Andrews Jr., at home; a son, James Martin (Myrna) Andrews of Dundee; a daughter, Carol L. Cadwell of Penn Yan; 5 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Amiel (Velma) Radka of Waterloo, Richard (Winnie) Radka of Dundee; 5 sisters, Leah Johnson of Kentucky, Helen Ilnicki of Penn Yan, Edith Anstee of Auburn, Norma Schick of McClellandtown, PA, Joyce Waite of Dundee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was pre-deceased by 2 granddaughters, Rachel Andrews in 1986, and Karen Conklin in 2003; a sister, Lydia Beckwith; and 4 brothers, Arthur, William, Albert, and Walter Radka. Online condolences can be sent by visiting www.bairdfuneralhomedundee.com.
