Barrington: Ella O. Knapp, age 90, of Barrington, NY, died Tuesday, December 17, 2013, with her loving daughters at her side in The Homestead, in Penn Yan, N.Y. Friends may call from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday (Dec. 20) at the Baird Funeral Home, 36 Water Street, Dundee. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday (Dec. 21) at the Barrington Community Church, 4560 Old Bath Rd., Dundee, with Rev. Gerald Vanaman officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Dundee, at the convenience of the family in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to Barrington Community Church, P.O. Box 73, Dundee, NY 14837.
Ella was born April 21, 1923, in Rushville, NY, the only daughter of the late Harold and Rita Santee Haviland. On December 30, 1963, in Lawrenceville, Pennsylvania, she married Dayton L. Knapp, who passed away on August 31, 1989. A lifelong area resident, Ella was a vineyardist for most of her life; in her later years, she worked at The Fabric Shop in Dundee, retiring in 2005. Mrs. Knapp was a very active member of the Barrington Community Church, having served as Treasurer, Chairman of Old Home Days, and Head Chef of the Ham Diners. She was a member of Yates County Home Bureau and served on the Town of Barrington Election Board. She will be remembered for her writings in Neighbors Notes for Barrington in the Dundee Observer for many years. In her spare time, she was never one to idle away her time; she was always knitting or quilting thousands of items for family, friends, or the less fortunate.
She is loved and will be dearly missed by 3 daughters: Teresa C. Moorehouse of Jupiter, FL, Nancy J. Hedrick of Spring Hill, FL, Sherry L. Knapp of Penn Yan; 3 sons: David L. (Rachel) Knapp of Tallahassee, FL, Larry W. Knapp of Keuka Park, NY, Robert D. (Marilyn) Knapp of Spring Hill, FL; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Elaine Haviland of Jupiter, FL; a brother-in-law, Jamie Knapp of Barrington; several nieces and nephews; and countless friends.
Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a son, Bill H. Moorehouse, in 1966, an infant son, Dale L. Knapp, in 1969, and two brothers, Joseph Haviland and Addison Haviland.
