Dundee: Barbara J. Smith, age 77, of Dundee, NY, died Tuesday, January 21, 2014, at Schuyler Hospital in Montour Falls, N.Y. Friends may call from 10:00 to 12:00 noon Thursday (Jan. 23) at the Baird Funeral Home, 36 Water Street, Dundee, where her funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon with Pastor Whendy Wolverton officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Dundee, in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dundee Fire Company Emergency Squad, 12 Union St., Dundee, NY 14837, or the Schuyler Health Foundation, P.O. Box 828, Montour Falls, NY 14865.

Barbara was born June 13, 1936, in Dundee, NY, the daughter of the late Albert and Anna Lajza Hess. She graduated from Dundee Central School in 1954. On February 23, 1957, in the Wayne Baptist Church, she married Roland E. Smith. A lifelong area resident, she was employed as a waitress for 33 years by Glen Motor Inn in Watkins Glen, NY.

She is loved and will be dearly missed by her husband of almost 57 years, Roland E. Smith Sr., at home; a daughter, Dorothy Ann (Terry L. Wax) McCann of Fort Meade, FL; 4 sons, Roland E. (Glenda) Smith Jr. of Dundee, Duane C. (Bernadine Rapacki) Smith of Elmira, Lyman W. (Emmie) Smith of Canastota, NY, and Ross E. (Sandra) Smith of Dundee; 8 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; 6 sisters, Rose Marie Smith of Watkins Glen, Cora Jane (Roger) Miller of Dundee, Leona Smith of Painted Post, Mary Ruth (Jerry) Whipple of Chittenango, Mildred Bates of Dresden, and Shirley Dobson of Himrod; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by 2 sons, Randy L. Smith in 1961 and Leonard E. Smith in 2009, a brother, Albert Hess in 2001, and 2 sisters, Gloria Grenham in 1994 and Virginia Stahl in 2009.
