Dundee, NY/Danbury, CT: Andre Lopes Mendes, age 81, of 44 Water St., Dundee, NY, formerly of Danbury, CT, died Friday, June 28, 2013, at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital in Penn Yan, NY. Friends may call from 4-6 pm Sunday (June 30) at the Baird Funeral Home, 36 Water Street, Dundee, where a Catholic funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon Monday (July 1). Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Dundee. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dundee Fire Company Emergency Squad, 12 Union St., Dundee, NY 14837.

Andre was born April 21, 1932, in Chancery, France, the son of the late Fernando and Alizira Borges Mendes Lopes. On April 28, 1957, in Ferreiroz do Do, Portugal, he married the former Margarida P. Da Luz Pereira. They moved to Danbury, Connecticut, in 1961. He was a retired foreman employed by Austin Paving of Danbury, CT, for 27 years, and for A & J Paving part-time after his retirement. Mr. Mendes was a long-time member of the Portuguese American Club, the Sons of Portugal, the Danbury Moose Lodge, a Life Member of the North American Hunting Club, and the NRA. In his younger years, he loved rabbit hunting, watching boxing and soccer on TV, and socializing at "Marcel's Place."

He is loved and will be dearly missed by his wife of 56 years, Margarida P. Mendes, in Dundee; a son, Marcel L. (Donna) Mendes of Poughkeepsie; a daughter, Cilinia M. (Baird) Booth of Dundee; 3 granddaughters, Kayla M. Mendes of Poughkeepsie, Corrina M. Booth, and Cara L. Booth, both of Dundee; 2 brothers, Marcel (Natalie) Mendes and Roger (Betty) Lopes, both of Danbury, CT; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by a brother, Antonio, in France.
