Tyrone — Judith C. Shafer, age 82, passed away peacefully at her home on December 25, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Judith, known as Judy, was born May 20, 1943, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and was the adopted daughter of the late Edward and Grace Crotty. She met her husband, Harold Gordon Shafer Jr., while spending summers on Lamoka Lake. The couple married in 1963 and shared a life devoted to family, faith, and community.
Judy and Gordie raised two daughters, Debbie (Jeff) Cupps of Pasadena, Maryland, and Beth (Thom) Woods of Lamoka Lake. She was a proud grandmother to David, Jonathan, and Leah, and a great-grandmother to James, Eleanor, and Ava Marie Grace.
She dedicated her life to her family and served for many years as a pastoral assistant at St. Mary’s of the Lake Church in Watkins Glen. Judy was also active in the Stephen Ministry and served as a 4-H leader, mentoring and encouraging young people in the community.
Throughout her life, Judy found joy in cooking, canning, reading, gardening, and appreciating nature. She lived in Elmira before settling on the family homestead in Altay and later on Lamoka Lake.
Calling hours will be held Friday, January 2, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Royce-Chedzoy Funeral Home, 212 East Fourth Street, Watkins Glen. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, January 3, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s of the Lake Church, 905 North Decatur Street, Watkins Glen. Burial will follow at Tyrone Union Cemetery.
