Joyce Slocum

Joyce A. Slocum age 83, of Penn Yan, and resident of The Homestead, passed away peacefully on November 3, 2023.

Joyce was born in Dresden on December 15, 1939, to the late Ole and Josephine Nelson. She will be deeply missed by her three stepchildren, Joan (Ronald) Barkley, Virginia Slocum Colf, and George (Denise) Slocum; her brother Floyd E. Nelson; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband George T. Slocum and daughter Jennifer Lynn Slocum; and her brothers Willard and Paul Nelson.

Joyce's life was filled with simple joys that brought her immense happiness. She delighted in playing bingo, indulging her creative spirit through crafts, and cherishing the loving companionship of cats and dogs. Her home was a testament to her joyful spirit as she enthusiastically decorated it for every holiday. Joyce found solace in solving word puzzles and found inspiration in the uplifting melodies of Gaither gospel music.

She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Penn Yan, finding comfort in her faith and church. Prior to starting a family, she worked at Michael Sterns in Penn Yan but then dedicated herself fully to raising her daughter and transitioning to private housekeeping.

A Celebration of Joyce's life will be held on Friday, (December 15),- on what would have been her birthday - at Weldon Funeral Home located at 102 E. Main St., Penn Yan. The family will receive guests from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. followed by a memorial service at the funeral home at 3 p.m. A private burial was held in Shuman Cemetery.

Memorial donations in her memory may be made to the First Baptist Church, 224 Main St. Penn Yan, N.Y. 14527 or the Humane Society of Yates County, PO Box 12, Penn Yan, N.Y. 14527.
