Ida was born December 1, 1929 in Brienne, Bessarabia, Romania, the daughter of Albert and Emma Hannemann Waelz. In 1952, together with her parents and brother, she emigrated from Germany to the United States. She lived in Wisconsin, then moved to New Jersey where she met and married her husband, Alfred. In 1957, they moved to Waterloo, where she and her husband made their life, raised their family and built a house, a home that she enjoyed with her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved the outdoors, keeping flower beds and large vegetable gardens, boating with her young family and traveling to National Parks with her husband in retirement. She always baked and it became a retirement hobby. She and her husband enjoyed activities with friends, church and clubs: Holiday Rambler, Elks and Germanian Lodge. She retired after 22 years with Greenwood Foods/Borden's Real Lemon. She was a longtime member of Calvary Lutheran Church.

Ida is survived by her children, Irene (David) Barber and Gary (Mary) Sawall of Seneca Falls, N.Y., Alice (John) Moses of Red Creek, N.Y., and Nancy (Daniel) Gilbo of Waterloo, N.Y.; ten grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; brother Winfried Waelz; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Alfred, with whom she celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary; daughter Rita Sawall; grandson Randy Gilbo; sister Irmgard (Waelz) Grote; nieces Janet Waelz and Inge (Sawall) Burgess; nephew Walter Grote, Jr. and Dieter Sawall.
