UPDATE: Waterloo Mayor Drops Reelection Bid, Primary Will Still Be Held

SHARE NOW

Waterloo’s mayor has announced he is dropping his bid for reelection.

In a statement, Jack O’Connor cited his current health status as the reason why he won’t run again.

Waterloo Republican Committee Chair Sue Ann Fisher says the primary election is still on, however, and O’Connor’s name will remain on the ballot.

With O’Connor dropping out, Walter Bennett is the party’s endorsed candidate.

The primary will be held from 12:00-9:00p on Tuesday at the Waterloo Community Center.

The 80-year-old O’Connor was elected in 2019 after defeating the three-term incumbent Ted Young.
