The William Smith College golf team picked up a 3–1 victory over Geneseo in a match play event at Clifton Springs Country Club on Tuesday afternoon.
Senior Caroline Gannon set the tone early in the top pairing, winning the first three holes and never looking back. She secured her match 5 and 4 over Geneseo’s Hanna Bechard.
First-year Maggie McCarthy also came out strong, building an early lead and closing out her match 3 and 2 against Samantha Petroci.
Geneseo earned its lone point at the No. 3 spot, as Annabel Barberich defeated William Smith junior Tara Valas 7 and 6.
In the final pairing, first-year Samantha Murray battled back and forth with Riley Tripp before pulling away on the back nine. Murray clinched the win with a par on 14 to secure a 4 and 3 victory.
With the 3–1 result, William Smith improves its momentum heading into tournament play. The Herons will compete next at the Keuka Fall Invitational on Wednesday, Sept. 24.
