UAlbany Lacrosse Hands Hobart 17-12 Loss

SHARE NOW

The Hobart lacrosse team got 20 saves from junior goalie Elhanan Wilson and dominated the faceoff X, but the Statesmen fell 17-12 to UAlbany in the Poole Family Dome.

With sophomore Jackson Faiola injured, Wilson made his first start of the season and produced a career-high 20 stops, including nine in the second quarter. It’s the most saves in a game by a Hobart goalie since Kevin Holtby ’23 made 23 stops at Bryant April 3, 2021. The Statesmen also had a strong showing at the faceoff X, winning 23-of-32 with a 31-22 advantage in ground balls. Junior Seamus Schofield led the charge, winning 14-of-15 with 10 ground balls. Junior Cade Dino led the Statesmen with four points on three goals and an assist.

The Great Danes were led by sophomore Ryan Doherty’s nine goals, tying the program’s single game record. Junior Silas Richmond added four assists. First-year goalie Brady Smith made 10 saves to earn the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Less than two minutes into the game, Doherty opened the game’s scoring off an assist from Richmond.
  • Senior Alex Rosa tied the game with a man-down goal, assisted by classmate Will Delano midway through the first quarter.
  • UAlbany seized the lead for good with four straight goals, including two more from Doherty, in a span of just over two minutes.
  • The teams scored three times in the final minute of the first quarter. Statesmen sophomore Tye Steenhuis and junior Connor DiTomasso (2 gls) sandwiched goals around a tally by the Great Dane junior Koleton Marquis (3 gls).
  • UAlbany led 6-3 after 15 minutes.
  • The Great Danes got three more goals from Doherty in the second quarter and outscored the Statesmen 4-3 to take a 10-6 lead into halftime.
  • Hobart appeared to cut the visitor’s lead to three with over five minutes left in the half on Daniel Cano’s shot into the lower left corner of the cage, but after the officiating crew huddled, they waived off the goal. It would have been the first back-to-back goals for Hobart in the game.
  • Senior John Jude Considine scored a highlight reel goal with one second remaining in the half. He raced from behind the cage to the right of Smith’s crease, leapt to the front of the cage and hung in the air long enough to snap off a shot for his fifth goal of the year.
  • In the second half, UAlbany used another four-goal run to build its largest lead of the game, 14-6, with under four minutes left in the third quarter.
  • Hobart put together a three-goal run that spanned the third and fourth quarters. Delano, DiTomasso and Considine scored in succession to make it a 14-9 game 13:30 left.
  • The Great Danes got two goals back before the Statesmen ended the game on a 3-1 run, including a pair of goals by Dino.

UP NEXT

  • UAlbany (2-4) will open America East play at Bryant at 7 p.m. March 15.
