Syracuse University Fires Football Coach

SHARE NOW

Dino Babers is out as Syracuse University football coach. The University’s Director of Athletics John Wildhack made the announcement on Sunday and said a national search to find Babers’s successor is now underway. Tight Ends Coach Nunzio Campanile will coach the Orange in their upcoming game against Wake Forest.

In his almost eight full seasons as head coach, Babers had just two winning seasons, including a 10-win season in 2018. Last season, the Orange started out 6-0 but only won one of their remaining on their remaining seven games. This season, Syracuse started 4-0 but then dropped five straight to conference opponents. Syracuse dropped to 5-6 on Saturday and 1-6 in ACC play with its 31-22 loss to Georgia Tech.

Babers won 41 games during his time at Syracuse and lost 55. In conference games, he was 20-45.

“I appreciate everything Dino, his wife Susan, and their family have done over the last eight years for Syracuse Athletics, Syracuse University, and most importantly, our student-athletes. Thanks to Dino’s leadership, our student-athletes have performed at the highest levels in the classroom, have dedicated countless hours to supporting our communities, and have gone on to achieve great success, both professionally and personally. As we embark on a change in leadership at the helm of Syracuse Football, on behalf of Syracuse University I thank Coach Babers for his leadership, character and dedication, and wish him well in his future endeavors.”
