Shane Van Gisbergen continued his mastery of road-course racing Sunday, cruising to victory at Watkins Glen International for his fourth NASCAR Cup Series road-course win of the season.
The 36-year-old New Zealander led a race-high 38 of 90 laps, including the final 17, and crossed the finish line 11.116 seconds ahead of Christopher Bell. Holly Cain with NASCAR Wire Service said Sunday’s victory by SVG marked his second win of the year by more than 10 seconds.
In his first full-time Cup Series season, Van Gisbergen has been nearly unbeatable on road courses, with victories at Mexico City, Chicago, Sonoma, and now Watkins Glen. The win sets a rookie record and ties him with Denny Hamlin for the most wins in the series this season.
