The William Smith College field hockey team fell 4-1 to No. 18 Ursinus College on Saturday afternoon, with Mother Nature cutting the game short. Severe thunderstorms forced the game to be suspended before the fourth quarter, and it was officially ruled final.
Ursinus scored three third-quarter goals to pull away after a tight first half. Kirsten Johnson led the Bears with a goal and two assists, while Rachel Fosbenner, Marie Brainard, and Lauren Sieczkowski also scored. Graduate student Rebecca Mantione scored William Smith’s lone goal on a penalty corner, her first of the season and 21st of her career, assisted by junior Leah Griffith.
How It Happened
- Fosbenner opened the scoring for Ursinus midway through the first quarter.
- William Smith equalized late in the frame on Mantione’s goal. The first half ended tied 1-1, with the Herons outshooting the Bears 6-5.
- In the third quarter, Ursinus erupted with three goals in just over four minutes, all involving Johnson. She assisted Brainard and Sieczkowski on back-to-back penalty corner goals, then scored herself on a rebound to make it 4-1.
