Statesmen Split Twin Bill At Skidmore

SHARE NOW

The Hobart baseball team earned a doubleheader split at Skidmore this afternoon. First-year Jack Farnen’s two-run double sparked the Statesmen to an 8-4 win in the opener while the team’s ninth-inning rally came up just short in the nightcap as the Thoroughbreds held on for a 10-9 win.

Farnen led Hobart at the plate with three hits and four RBIs on the day. Senior Nate Johnson and sophomores Connor Schmiedlin and Sean Garvin also collected three hits apiece. Johnson had two RBIs, while Schmiedlin and Garvin had one each.

HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME 1

  • Senior Griffin Snyder gave the Statesmen a solid start, going six innings to get the win. He was charged with all four runs—on a pair of Skidmore home runs—but only one was earned.
  • The Thoroughbreds took the early lead with a three-run homer in the first inning.
  • Johnson got Hobart on the board with an RBI double in the third. The Statesmen added a second run in the inning when sophomore Jack Byrnes was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
  • Skidmore padded its lead to 4-2 with a solo homer in the bottom of the third.
  • Hobart plated tied the game in the fourth inning. Junior Nate Garrett delivered an RBI double and Johnson followed with an RBI single.
  • The Statesmen took the lead in the seventh inning with a two-out rally.
  • Garvin got things started with an infield single. First-year Jay Voica followed with a single up the middle. Hobart loaded the bases on a Skidmore error.
  • Farnen doubled down the left field line, scoring Garvin and Voica.
  • The Statesmen added to its lead with two more runs in the ninth. Farnen had an RBI single and Schmiedlin tacked on a sacrifice fly.
  • Sophomore Charlie Forrest pitched a scoreless seventh and senior Nicholas Franceschi contained the Thoroughbreds in the eighth and ninth to earn his second save of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME 2

  • Senior Owen Sanders had a two-run double and a two-run home run—Hobart’s first home run of the season—but the Statesmen trailed 10-4 going into the ninth inning.
  • First-year Jackson Rucker led off the inning with pinch hit double and Connor O’Neil followed with an RBI double to make it 10-5.
  • Farnen, junior Christian Petry, junior Will Jones, and Garvin each collected RBIs to make it a one-run game. Garvin’s double put the go-ahead run on second with two outs, but Skidmore was able to escape the jam with a ground out to end the game.

FOR THE RECORD

  • Hobart is 15-8 overall, 5-5 in Liberty League play.
  • Skidmore is 16-7-2, 9-2 in the league.

MONDAY MAKEUP

  • The Statesmen will be back in action Monday, April 14, when they visit RPI for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for noon. The twin bill was originally scheduled for Saturday, but was pushed back two days due to the weather.
