SHARE NOW

The Hobart baseball team lost a 3-1 decision in the first game of a three-game weekend series at Farmingdale State this afternoon. The Statesmen brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the top of the ninth, but the Rams were able to nail down the win.

FOR THE RECORD

  • Hobart: 1-2
  • Farmingdale State: 1-2

Hobart starting pitcher, senior Griffin Snyder faced only nine batters through three innings, erasing a second inning single with double play.

Farmingdale State’s Johnny Dougherty matched Griffin’s strong start. He didn’t allow a hit in three innings of work, facing just two over the minimum.

TURNING POINT

  • In the fourth inning, the Rams sent Michael Camardi to the mound. Junior Will Jones broke up the no-hitter with a single to right, but the game remained scoreless.
  • In the bottom half of the inning, the home team broke through for two runs.
  • With one out and runners on the corners, Richie Heyder was caught stealing, but while he was in the run-down, Mike Kocovic scrambled home for the game’s first run.
  • The next batter, Vincent Deiosso, walked and later scored when Jordan Lambert lifted a fly ball into center field that was dropped.

Hobart got a run back in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Cole Conte led off with a double. Senior Owen Sanders followed with a bunt single that moved Conte to third. With one out, senior Nate Johnson brought Conte home when the Rams’ shortstop threw the ball away attempting to start a double play.

Farmingdale State restored its two-run lead with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth.

THREATENING

  • Hobart managed to put two runners on base in the sixth and the ninth, but couldn’t manufacture another run.
  • A double play allowed the Rams to escape the sixth unscathed.
  • In the final inning, Conte delivered his second hit of the game, putting runners on the corners with one out.
  • Junior Derek Torres was brought in to face the next batter and got a swinging strike out.
  • The Rams then turned to Tyler DiRocco, who got a ground ball out to earn the save.

LET’S PLAY TWO

  • Hobart and Farmingdale State will play a double header starting at noon Saturday
